Killer floods cause havoc in Acapulco

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Pauline has caused widespread devastation in Acapulco, Mexico. Official estimates indicate that at least 122 people were killed. The hurricane also caused widespread damage in the rest of the state of Guerrero and in the neighbouring state of Oaxaca. Experts believe that the hurricane, which has died down slightly, could regain strength and hit further north, nearer to the US border. It is possible that the suddenness and unanticipated strength of Hurricane Pauline was the result of the El Nino weather pattern.

Mexico accused of bombing civilians

Article Abstract:

Mexican president Ernesto Zedillo is being increasingly criticised for the action being taken by government forces against the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN). He has introduced a policy of taking a tough line against rebel forces, but his public image is being damaged by reports of the torture of detainees and bombing of civilians. Many observers now fear that there could be human rights abuses or even a scorched-earth policy.

Zedillo in gamble to capture rebel chief

Article Abstract:

Mexican president Ernesto Zedillo is trying tough new tactics to defeat the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN). He has diminished the myth surrounding guerrilla leader Sub-commandante Marcos by naming him as Rafael Sebastian Guillen Vicente, and has ordered his arrest. Troops are now closing in on rebel-held areas, and many observers believe that the rebel leader will now soon be captured.
