Killings reveal divided Nigeria

Article Abstract:

There is a very wide gap in Nigeria between the military and ordinary civilians. This has been clearly demonstrated recently by reactions to the executions of minority-rights activist Kenule Saro-Wiwa and a number of other activists. The military believes that the executions were justified, while ordinary people have expressed outrage. The case of Kenule Saro-Wiwa has also split the ruling military circle itself, with some senior officers expressing the view that the government will not be able to go against the wishes of ordinary people indefinitely.

The evil at the heart of Nigeria

Article Abstract:

Nigeria's Ogoni people deserve justice and autonomy, according to executed writer Ken Saro-Wiwa. They must be allowed to control their own political affairs, and their economic resources must be used for their own benefit. Their land has been destroyed by the search for oil over recent decades, and this destruction will only be brought to an end by a separate Ogoni government. The international community should take urgent action to save these people.
