Klaus Tennstedt

Article Abstract:

Conductor Klaus Tennstedt showed talent as a violinist from an early age, and was made leader of the Halle, Germany, opera orchestra while still a teenager. He began to gain a reputation as a soloist, but his playing career was cut short by a growth on his left hand. He developed a career as an opera conductor at Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany, Schwerin, Germany, and Dresden, Germany, and in Mar 1971 defected to west Germany. He took up the music directorship of the opera at Kiel, Germany, and outside Germany gained a reputation as an interpreter of Romantic and Late Romantic music.

Disharmony among the musicians

Article Abstract:

London's position as a musical centre is threatened by too many orchestras sharing insufficient finance and a lack of a world standard concert hall. Sir Henry Wood extended patrons of the Promenade Concerts which began in 1895 and created a demand for world class concerts. The Arts Council of Great Britain provides public funding in order for the arts to be publicly accessible but in 1992 seat prices are exorbitant, at 120 pounds sterling for Covent Garden, yet do not cover performance costs.

The battle for the eyes and ears of classical music lovers

Article Abstract:

There are more music magazines in Britain than anywhere else except Germany but new ones will be launched in Aug 1992 - BBC Music Magazine - and in Sep 1992 - CD Classics. Four existing magazines deal with classical records including Gramophone, a monthly launched in 1922, Classic CD, CD Review and Classics. Monthlies depend on record companies advertisements and providing musicians interviews and CD excerpts.
