Kohl battles to curb mounting panic about loss of the mark

Article Abstract:

It is essential that the target date of 1999 for the introduction of a single European currency is not postponed, as this would reduce the impetus towards monetary union, according to German chancellor Helmut Kohl. He remains firmly committed to greater European integration, and is trying hard to dispel fears among ordinary Germans that a single currency would not be as strong as the German mark. In his view, a stronger German mark would disrupt relations with neighbouring countries, possibly causing them to unite and leave Germany isolated.

The nation that just won't work

Article Abstract:

There is serious social unrest in Belgium following the failure of the country's state institutions to prevent paedophile killings and suspicion over the sudden removal of the judge involved with this case. There is also considerable anger over the apparent involvement of leading politicians in recent corruption scandals. Many Belgians are unable to adequately assess what is really going wrong with their country.

Stricken Gdansk shipyard in last desperate plea

Article Abstract:

The Gdansk shipyard, which became a symbol of freedom through its associations with Lech Walesa, who became president of Poland in 1991, is now facing closure. It made a loss of $35 million in 1995, and now seems unlikely to attract investors in time to save it from bankruptcy. Its closure would mean the loss of 7,000 jobs, and would also endanger 65,000 jobs in associated industries.
