Labour can learn from Victorian values

Article Abstract:

It has become widely accepted that Clause IV of the Labour party's constitution, which expresses a commitment to common ownership, resulted from concern about the excesses of free market capitalism in Victorian times. In fact, it is more true to say that this view resulted from conditions created by the first world war. However, the assumptions which made Clause IV acceptable have now disappeared, and maintaining an unrealistic commitment to a greatly extended state sector will not be to the party's advantage.

A winning reform for Labour

Article Abstract:

One of the key issues to be discussed at the Labour party conference in Oct 1995 will be the party's policy on holding a referendum on electoral reform. This policy was first introduced under former leader John Smith, and was then confirmed by Tony Blair. A referendum is still the right approach, as ordinary people should be allowed to determine the country's electoral system. However, considerable efforts are likely to be made to force the party to drop this approach.
