Lafontaine goes into a wilderness

Article Abstract:

Oskar Lafontaine, who has resigned as German Finance Minister, has shown great determination throughout his political career. He has not hesitated to make enemies, and has shown a strong ability to convince ordinary people. His political career seemed to have come to an end in 1990 after he stood unsuccessfully against former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, but he was gradually able to reestablish himself. However, he made the mistake of treating the Social Democrats' election success as a personal victory, and this brought him into conflict with Chancellor Gerhard Schroder.

One hundred days of farce

Article Abstract:

Germany's Social Democrat and Green coalition government has seen mixed performance in its first 100 days. Some of its policies, including restoring sick pay and child benefits to the levels from which they had been reduced by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl's government, have been positive. However, it has still not been established who is really in control. Chancellor Gerhard Schroder has won every important policy conflict so far, but only because he has been backed by his troubleshooter Bodo Hombach.

Nazi who helped in genocide goes free

Article Abstract:

Alfons Gotzfried, a former concentration camp guard, has been found guilty by a court in Stuttgart, Germany, of assisting in 17,000 murders during the second world war. However, there was insufficient evidence to jail him. He had earlier admitted killing up to 500 people with his own hands, but then retracted this confession. War crimes investigators in Germany have details of a further 61 suspects, but it is unlikely that any prosecutions will take place.
