Pope defeats his abortion rebels

Article Abstract:

Bishop Karl Lehmann, the liberal head of the German Catholic Church, has announced that the church will remain in the German state-funded system of counselling for women seeking an abortion. It will continue to issue the certificates required by law before a woman can have a pregnancy terminated, but these will now state 'This certificate cannot be used for the carrying out of a legal abortion.' This development, which follows strong pressure from the Pope, leaves the situation regarding the German Catholic Church's stance on abortion uncertain.

Revealed: how Nazis stubbed out smoking

Article Abstract:

It is gradually becoming clear that scientists working for the Third Reich uncovered strong evidence to link smoking with lung cancer, thus placing Germany many years ahead of the rest of the world in recognizing the health risks of smoking. Research into smoking by Nazi scientists was largely fuelled by Adolf Hitler's strong dislike of smoking. The international scientific community was aware of research being undertaken by Nazi scientists, but did not wish to acknowledge that it could be of any real value.
