Landlord, tell us a tale of old Ireland

Article Abstract:

Melodrama is the base of the theatre, according to Irish dramatist John B. Keane. He makes no excuses for drawing on the strong Irish storytelling tradition, and defends 'Sive,' his first play, against those who claim that it is larger-than-life and melodramatic. This play has rich poetry and great humour in its language, and this tends to disguise the great narrative strength of the storytelling. He has recently been suffering from cancer, so has focused on writing short stories. However, he hopes to return to writing plays in 1998.

Dabbling in the gene pool

Article Abstract:

It is important not to let facts overwhelm the imagination, according to Irish playwright and author Sebastian Barry. When writing his play 'Prayers of Sherkin,' which is soon to open at the Old Vic in London, England, he rejected direct research into his family background, on which the play is based. He preferred instead to use childhood memories and anecdotes. He has now moved on from this play, which was premiered in 1990, and has recently completed a novel, 'The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty,' his first since the mid-1980s.

Playboys of the Emerald Isle

Article Abstract:

Irish theater appears to be flourishing when viewed from London, England, where new works by Irish playwrights are being performed, but this is less true seen from Dublin, Ireland. The two main theaters, the Gate and the Abbey, appear to focus on the works of a few well-known playwrights such as Oscar Wilde and Sean O'Casey. Independent theater companies are developing well in Ireland, but the main houses stick to a narrow repertoire which gives an anachronistic, middle class image to the industry.
