Money for old robes

Article Abstract:

There were 4,542 charity shops in the UK in 1996, producing profits of 67 million pounds sterling on turnover of 247 million pounds sterling. Charity shops benefit from an 80% reduction in business rates, and this can mean that they are more competitive than many small businesses. There is now very strong competition between charity shops for donations and volunteers, and charity shops are also facing competition from car boot sales. In many cases, staff are not adequately trained, and this can mean that they underprice certain goods.

Battle of the booze

Article Abstract:

Alcohol consumption can involve health risks, and this is shown by the death of a British actor, Kevin Lloyd. There may be some benfits from drinking, such as protection against blood clots, but these are offset by disadvantages, especially from binge drinking. Binge drinking can affected the heart, and the pattern of drinking appears to be more important than the average amount consumed. Younger people are especially likely to binge drink, but all adult drinkers tend to take risks at some time.

The hazards of a herbivore

Article Abstract:

A vegetarian diet is not necessarily particularly healthy unless it compensates for the nutrients lost by not eating meat or fish. Some vegetarians can lack iron, thus running the risk of anaemia, while others consume insufficient quantities of vitamin B12, which can cause neurological damage. It is important to pay particularly attention to the nutritional status of vegetarian children, especially if they eat a lot of convenience vegetarian foods.
