Heads roll at Hambros over Co-op bid

Article Abstract:

Investment bank Hambros has seen the resignation of three senior corporate finance officers following the publication of a report by law firm Norton Rose into the bank's role in the unsuccessful 1.2 billion pounds sterling bid for Co-operative Wholesale Society. Those who have resigned are Nigel Pantling, head of corporate finance, and Andrew Salmon and Peter Large, both of whom were directly involved with the Co-operative Wholesale Society bid. Rise of the goldman boy

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed that Goldman Sachs co-Chief Operating Officer John Thornton would be successful in taking over full control of the investment bank if it were decided that his joint management role with John Thain were no longer appropriate. In summer 1998 it seemed that his future at Goldman Sachs was in doubt, as he appeared to be opposed to the bank's 19 billion pounds flotation, bringing him into conflict with then Chief Executive Jon Corzine. However, Corzine is soon to leave Goldman Sachs, and Thornton is a driving force behind the bank's revived plans for stock market flotation.
