It is very misguided to assume that continental Europe will continue to benefit from cyclical economy recovery and will not be affected by economic instability elsewhere in the world simply as a result of introducing the single European currency. The euro will not bring immediate and complete disaster. Indeed, in the short term it is just as likely to boost Europe's economies as to have a negative impact on them. However, it will add a new element of uncertainty at a time when there is already considerable economic uncertainty.
