Leading Tories examine merits of a pact with Unionist MPs

Article Abstract:

Northern Ireland has 17 members of parliament of which 13 are likely to be Unionists, and an understanding and arrangement with these might be an attractive option for the Conservatives if they obtain no overall majority in the forthcoming UK general election. Unlike the Liberal Democrats, their demands for supporting John Major's government would not involve major changes to the constitution in the form of a move towards proportional representation. They would probably settle for changes in Northern Ireland and Anglo-Irish policy.

Seething Irish anger after Unionist victory

Article Abstract:

The Irish Prime Minister, John Bruton, attributes the riots in Northern Ireland in mid-July 1996 to the UK government, after the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) changed its mind about letting Orangemen march. The Prime Minister believes that it was obvious that nationalist were becoming hostile. According to the RUC, over 1,300 plastic bullets were fired during riots in Londonderry, Belfast and other part of Northern Ireland on the night of July 11 and and early hours of July 12 1996.
