Lebanon dreams of peaceful connections

Article Abstract:

Lebanon, whose railways have been destroyed in the Middle East conflict, has plans for a new 329 million pounds sterling railway, which would run to Cairo, Egypt, via Israel, but these plans are completely reliant on the progress of the peace process. According to Abdullah Chebab, Director-General of Lebanese State Railways, which has a workforce of 150 laying track, which has had not had a train run on it since the 1970s, steam trains will not operate again, but they are being retained, possibly with a view to a museum.

Building a new Lebanon ravages its Ottoman treasures

Article Abstract:

The destruction of the magnificent buildings that once characterized Beirut, Lebanon, began in the 1960s, when large Ottoman houses on the sea front were pulled down to make way for apartment blocks. The city's most attractive buildings were also badly damaged in attacks by Syria and Israel in the 1980s. Now, the future of the remaining Ottoman buildings also seems very uncertain. This situation is the same across Lebanon, where land, rather than property, is valued.

Chirac rekindles a very dear friendship

Article Abstract:

France and Syria have many features in common, according to French president Jacques Chirac, who is currently on an official visit to Syria. Syria has welcomed moves by France to play a key role in the Middle East peace process, while France has stated its belief that peace will never truly be achieved in the Middle East if Syria is excluded. There are strong signs that Syria is keen to forge a new alliance with France.
