Let Ken Livingstone stand - the better to see him defeated

Article Abstract:

The issue of whether the UK Labour party should allow Ken Livingstone to be one of the names on the internal party ballot to decide the candidate for the post of Mayor of London, England, has attracted considerable controversy. Most observers believe that he should be included, and this view is shared by Labour activists. It is possible to argue that Livingstone has been disloyal to the Labour party, and should therefore not be included. However, no candidate selected by Labour in a ballot that excludes Livingstone will be seen by voters as legitimate.

Is there any more to Englishness than the Titfield Thunderbolt?

Article Abstract:

It will become increasingly necessary to debate the future of England as Wales and Scotland begin to establish separate political identities. There is a danger that certain views about what England is and who the English are will become predominant and be imposed on the English. In particular, there is a risk of the English being portrayed as violent, ignorant and hypocritical. However, it must be remembered that English culture is very resilient, and its deeply embedded characteristics will determine the country's future.
