Retailers feeling the price squeeze

Article Abstract:

Many retailers in the UK are facing significant difficulties as retail prices continue to decline. Against this background, it seems hard to explain why the UK's short-term interest rates are still considerably higher than those of the rest of Europe. If interest rates were to be reduced, prices and wages could begin rising quite rapidly and a boom would emerge. However, the UK is close to the top of the economic cycle going down, while most European countries are close to the bottom of the cycle going up. This means that it would not be appropriate for the UK to have the same interest rates as the rest of Europe, even though inflation rates are about the same.

Time to rein in the supermarket big players

Article Abstract:

The creation of large supermarket chains in the UK has caused environmental damage, eliminated regional differences and create homogenous choice. However, it has also brought great convenience to many people, who also benefit from a wide range of choice and highly competitive prices. Small high street retailers have been claiming some time that they are being pushed out of business by large out-of-town supermarkets, which often sell certain commodity products, such as bread, at a loss in order to attract customers. It may now be time to introduce a system which prevents large distributors and retailers from obtaining preferential terms of supply.

Net gain may be only for consumers

Article Abstract:

There are a number of very interesting investment issues associated with the Internet. Some believe that the current boom in Internet stocks will eventually come to an end, while others expect the market capitalization of the Internet sector to continue to increase exponentially. There will be some business successes on the Internet, but it is not really clear where the money-making capacity of the Internet is situated, if anywhere. It could be that the only businesses to really benefit from the Internet will be Internet wholesalers and gatekeepers.
