Let's exchange addresses

Article Abstract:

Some home owners who wish to move try bartering to save time and money on estate agents' fees and stamp duty. It also releases owners from chains involving first-time buyers. About 40% of house swaps occur because of the lack of conventional sellers. Property ownership is 65% in the UK in 1993, so the number of first-time buyers is reducing, affecting the chains in house purchase. Some swaps are arranged through computer-match property services and some by conventional agents promoting swaps in local papers.

New lease of life for an endangered species

Article Abstract:

There may be tax incentives on rents and capital gains to encourage private landlords. Only about 7% of homes are privately rented. The popularity of home ownership hinders the availability of homes to rent and leads to repossession. Quality Street provide 2,000 rented, furnished flats which were bought ready-made. They intend to set up a chain of shops and to build 200 homes for rent in London, Manchester and Glasgow.
