Lifting the black woman's burden

Article Abstract:

It is important that men are taught to take responsibility for their behaviour, according to Mmatshilo Motsei, who founded the organization Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training (Adapt) in Alexandra township in Johannesburg, South Africa. She became acutely aware of the damage caused by domestic violence while working as a nurse in a trauma unit, and this gave her the strength to deal with violence in her own marriage. Young black men are now being assisted to come to terms with the traditional subjugation of women.

Our disappearing black stars

Article Abstract:

Students from ethnic minorities do not appear to perform as well at Cambridge University, England, as their white counterparts. This is particularly the case for black students, of whom only 3% achieved a first class degree in 1997 and 1998. Students who indicated that their ethnic background was Indian performed better than students from other ethnic groups, but only if they had attended an independent school. It appears that each subject has its own profile in relation to which students will be successful.
