Loch, stalk and smoking barrels

Article Abstract:

There is considerable conflict between hillwalkers and red deer stalkers in the Scottish Highlands. Landowners are under strong pressure to reduce deer numbers, as deer are regarded as having a negative impact on efforts to increase forested areas. Stalking also has considerable potential as a valuable source of income for landowners. However, hillwalkers wish to ensure that they have unrestricted access to Highland areas, and this can scare away deer. Hillwalkers argue that they too play a significant role in the Highland economy.

Article Abstract:

Sarah Finch and Steven Newton, who were buried for 16 hours following an avalanche on Aonach Mor, Scotland, have issued statements detailing their ordeal. Mountain guide Roger Wild also survived, but four other members of the party died. Finch and Newton both found that they could make a small space around them, thus ensuring that they could breathe. Newton was able to dig a hole to the surface, but was unable to dig himself out completely. They both suffered bruises, sprains and mild hypothermia.

Trust's old guard pulls up the drawbridge

Article Abstract:

The 52 members of the council of the National Trust, which determines the charity's policy, are elected in such a way as to ensure continuity of policy. There are currently nine vacancies on the council, and 17 nominations have been made. However, Charles Nunneley, the council's chairman, is able to make use of a large number of unmandated proxy votes, and this will ensure that the nine people out of the 17 who have been nominated who are already council members will retain their seats.
