To hell and back

Article Abstract:

Writing film music is an extremely liberating experience, according to composer Sir Malcolm Arnold, who at one stage in his career was working very hard on many film projects. However, his nine symphonies form the real basis of his output, and these reflect his deepest thoughts. He admits that these, along with his string quartets, are autobiographical, but that he prefers them to be regarded as pure music. He has experienced some difficult periods in his career, but now, at the age of 75, is gaining new public respect.

Farewell symphonies - by popular demand

Article Abstract:

Classical music concerts which are significant for marking the end of an era, such as the Royal Opera House's Farewell Gala Concert in advance of a two-year refurbishment programme, tend to attract very large audiences. This was also the experience of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra when Brendan O'Brien, who has led the orchestra for 29 years, played in his final concert. It seems that concert promoters should avoid promoting concerts as being a first performance of a work, as this tends to deter audiences.

Percussionists do it standing up

Article Abstract:

Jilly Cooper undertook extensive research into the way in which an orchestra operates before writing her novel 'Appassionata.' This included accompanying the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on two foreign tours and spending a week with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. She already had a reasonably wide knowledge of music, but was very keen to learn many details about orchestral procedures. The resulting novel contains a very wide range of musical references.
