Lock up your daughters

Article Abstract:

There is growing concern in the UK about girl gangs, which in some cases have committed serious crimes. However, it is important to avoid concluding that the greater social liberation of women generally is prompting greater violence among women. The growth in the number of crimes committed by young women is partly attributable to the widespread availability of alcohol and drugs. It must be remembered that the number of girls convicted of violent crime is still extremely small compared with the overall prison population.

The turn of the screws

Article Abstract:

Portrayals of prison officers in the UK have traditionally been negative, but a recent BBC documentary and a forthcoming ITV drama series have challenged this approach. The documentary shows prison officers as professional and caring, while the drama series, 'Jailbirds,' also attempts to give a fair insight into prison life. This more positive view of the work of prison officers comes at a time when efforts are being made to break down traditional prison culture.

Better to be a prisoner in your own home

Article Abstract:

The UK Prison Service believes that the electronic tagging of 'early release' prisoners has been successful, with only 5% being recalled for reoffending or contravening curfews. The Home Office now plans to expand electronic tagging, with minor criminals being sentenced to home curfew instead of being sent to prison. Some prisoners who have participated in the electronic tagging scheme report that there is a lack of support.
