London exile plots Saudi revolution

Article Abstract:

The small London, UK, premises of Islamic opposition leader Mohammed Masari have become the focus of opposition to Saudi Arabia's royal family. This has caused tension between the Foreign Office and the Saudi royal family, with the UK government coming under pressure to take a strong stand against Masari. His Committee for the Defence of Legitimate Rights (CDLR) is campaigning for a fully Islamic, non-aligned Saudi Arabia which would be free of foreign forces.

Intimate, profitable affairs with the House of Saud

Article Abstract:

The recent revelations that government minister Jonathan Aitken has had secret business links with Saudi Arabia has highlighted the unusual nature of the UK's relationship with Saudi Arabia throughout the 20th century. The links between the two companies are complicated, and involved such public figures as Lawrence of Arabia and Harry St John Philby. Cultural bonds have allowed the UK to gain a large share of foreign business in Saudi Arabia.

Bosnia will put Rifkind to the test

Article Abstract:

Malcolm Rifkind has been a generally popular choice to replace Douglas Hurd, who is retiring as foreign secretary. There will certainly be a change in style under Rifkind, who will use his experience as a lawyer in the post, while Hurd's style was that of an old-fashioned diplomat. He is likely to clash sharply with shadow foreign secretary Robin Cook.
