Lords vote puts Straw on the spot

Article Abstract:

The law lords have agreed by six to one that former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet does not have immunity from prosecution. They have also ruled that Pinochet cannot be tried for alleged crimes committed before 1988, thus making it much harder to extradite him to Spain. Home Secretary Jack Straw is now under strong pressure to decide Pinochet's legal fate. Pinochet's lawyers have applied to the High Court for a judicial review over the original granting by Straw of the extradition authority. If the appeal is unsuccessful, and Straw decides to proceed with the authority, then the extradition process would begin.

The torture without end for victims of Pinochet

Article Abstract:

Four former political prisoners of the military junta in Chile headed by General Augusto Pinochet have requested the Attorney General in the UK to charge Pinochet with torture and kidnapping. The outcome of their request, along with extradition request made by Spain, will be determined by whether the Law Lords decide that Pinochet enjoys immunity from prosecution as a former head of state. The former political prisoners include Sara De Witt and Christina Godoy-Navarrete, who until now have not told their children what they experienced at the hands of Chile's military junta.

Pinochet resists being sent to country where he cannot be put in jail

Article Abstract:

Many rumours continue to circulate in the UK about the likely fate of former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet, who is under house arrest. It appears that progress is being made towards having him extradited to Spain, although this could be a lengthy process. It is also possible that he will decide to go to Spain of his own accord. Under Spanish law, he is too old to be imprisoned, even if he were found guilty.
