Mail goes down the Tube

Article Abstract:

Associated Newspapers hopes that the launch of Metro, a free regional newspaper for London, England, will form the basis for a series of local free newspapers. The company also believes that Metro will be able to protect its position in London at a time when sales of the Evening Standard are not rising, despite promotional work. It has reached an exclusive 10-year agreement with London Underground under which London Underground will receive around 1.5 million pounds sterling a year if Metro is successful. The newspaper will be distributed from 1,000 bins in 261 Underground stations.

Who would be a editor?

Article Abstract:

UK newspaper editors have faced significant challenges in 1998. Indeed, eight have left their posts, reflecting that there is considerable insecurity associated with being a newspaper editor. Some observers believe that the rapid turnover of editors can be attributed to a structural change at the core of the newspaper business. Newspapers have had to become increasingly competitive as circulations have declined, and this means that it is impossible to provide long-term security for editors.

The man who made a monster

Article Abstract:

It is natural for people to want to read gossip, according to National Enquirer editor Iain Calder. He believes that many US newspapers have been experiencing falling sales because high-minded journalists presume to know what people want to read about. He does not believe that there are any problems associated with the techniques used in tabloid journalism, and has no moral objections to this sort of journalism. He is currently working to promote the UK edition of National Enquirer.
