Making a career out of caring

Article Abstract:

There are a number of different entry routes into nursing in the United Kingdom. It is possible to enter nursing through the traditional route with GCSEs and A-levels, but nursing can also be accessed through a degree in a relevant subject. Other entry routes include studying under the cadet scheme, which involves young school leavers working as care assistants in a local hospital while studying for an NVQ to enter nursing. After qualifying, nurses are required to undertake a minimum of 35 hours post-registration study over three years. There is also the possibility of much more extensive post-qualification study.

Start at the beginning...

Article Abstract:

It has been traditional for courses at UK universities and colleges to begin in Sept., but some institutions are now offering courses beginning in Jan. or Feb. These are generally four-term, two-year courses. They appeal particularly to mature students who are accustomed to working throughout the year and wish to complete their studies in a shorter period than the conventional three-year degree course allows. Students on these courses must work very hard and be prepared to have only a limited social life, but they prefer this approach because they want to find employment as quickly as possible.
