Making a change

Article Abstract:

Outplacement is to do with change, and is now seen by many employers as a necessary accompaniment to any business process which brings about change, according to Frances Cook, managing director of Sanders and Sidney. This company is responding to this trend by shifting towards career management, rather than simply being involved in finding similar employment for people who have been made redundant. It encourages flexible working practices, and is now also looking to operate as a virtual company throughout Europe.

At home amid the hurly-burly

Article Abstract:

It is very stimulating to be involved in a number of different business ventures, according to Sue Birley, who has recently been appointed non-executive director of NatWest Group. She is also professor of management at Imperial College, London, chairman of Newchurch and Co, a business consultancy, and a consultant to accounting firm Grant Thornton. She believes that her teaching work benefits from direct experience with business and that business activities allow her to test the theories she teaches.

Doing it the Logica Way

Article Abstract:

Computer company Logica has introduced the Logica Way programme, a new approach to personnel management. It aims to improve the integration of the company, making all 3,600 employees in 17 countries feel that they are part of a single organisation. The development of a 'resource management system' will allow senior executives to call on staff from around the world, and changes to the remuneration system will emphasise the increasingly global nature of the company's operations.
