Making a drama out of a crisis

Article Abstract:

Floods in China have helped the reputation of the People's Liberation Army, since soldiers have been involved in heroic efforts to deal with the floods. The floods are the worst seen in China since 1954. The Chinese economy has already been hit by increased unemployment. Natural disasters have been a unifying force in China, andhave been used to promote benevolence. The media has tended not to tackle some issues such as the causes of the floods and the conditions endured by some of the refugees.

Taiwan players weigh next move

Article Abstract:

It is now becoming clear that there is no longer any immediate danger of direct conflict between China and Taiwan. China is now talking of the possibility of reopening talks with Taiwan, but is still insisting that Taiwan severs official links with the outside world. Taiwan must consider how it can stabilise relations with China, while the US must remain on the alert for any further deterioration in relations with China.
