Man who bets 10bn pounds sterling on a crash

Article Abstract:

Tony Dye has become one of the most successful investment managers in the City of London through gambling large sums of money on future stock market trends. In his role as head of investment at pension fund manager PDFM, he identifies and purchases stocks to build up a portfolio of shares which have the potential to produce the best possible return for top pension funds. He takes an unusual approach, and up to 15% of his fund's money is held in cash and bonds. He has been extremely successful, and is regarded as one of the most powerful figures in the UK.

Crisis in a sesame seed bun

Article Abstract:

The hamburger has become a key symbol of the modern age, with developments in its character and image in each decade of the 20th century closely reflecting social trends. To some observers, it is a metaphor for modern demands for everything that is inexpensive and convenient, and also reflects that fact that most people have lost interest in 'real' food and proper mealtimes. It is now closely linked with BSE, which perhaps shows that focusing on what is cheap and convenient is in fact a misguided approach.

The holy war over a visionary in a cardigan

Article Abstract:

Christina Gallagher claims to be simply an ordinary housewife, but has built up a large following because she believes that she receives visions from the Virgin Mary and that the marks of Christ's crucifixion occasionally appear on her forehead, hands and feet. The Catholic church in Ireland is now to undertake an investigation into her House of Prayer, which has received donations of more than 500,000 pounds sterling. There are concerns about both the financial and the theological aspects of her work.
