The plight of Marconi can be seen as a reflection of difficulties within the hi-tech industry, especially in the telecoms sector. It is argued that capacity must be removed from the market.

There has been a wide-reaching reappraisal of long-term investment strategy over recent weeks. It appears that the current downturn is merely part of an ordinary cycle. If this is not the case, then it is possible that equities are in a secular bear market, as bond were in the period 1950 to 1980.
