RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was attacked by gangs of young people following the arrest of local MP Marios Matsakis, who had climbed a new communications mast at the base. There has been resentment of the activities of British soldiers stationed in Cyprus for some time, but many Cypriots have been shocked by the ferocity of the latest incident.

Marines wait for orders while politicians argue

There is continued confusion about the role of Royal Marines Special Boat Service troops in Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance do not wish foreign troops to be present in the country on a large scale, and the United Nations reports that the troops are not required to assist with humanitarian work.
