Masters of role playing

Article Abstract:

Theatre company Cheek by Jowl was created in 1981 by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, who met as law students at Cambridge University, England. Their first production was Wycherley's comedy 'The Country Wife,' and they have subsequently produced an adaptation of 'Vanity Fair' and Shakespeare tragedies and comedies. Their latest venture is 'Much Ado About Nothing,' which they have set in 1900 and made into a costume piece. Donnellan and Ormerod are now putting the company to one side as they take on freelance work.

Going the distance

Article Abstract:

The BBC's new six-part drama series 'Born to Run,' which was written by Debbie Horsfield, initially seems outrageous, but in fact has great emotional honesty, according to director Jean Stewart. She believes that her main role has been to link broad comic elements with a detailed insight into the lives of a small group of people. She was greatly attracted to the script, and decided to work on it even though she had received more lucrative offers from the US.

Missing in action: our black stars

Article Abstract:

Opportunities for black actors and actresses in the UK to play serious, challenging roles have diminished with the closure of almost all of the black theatre groups that were established in the 1980s. Integrated casting is rare, although this has become standard practice at leading young people's theatre groups such as Red Ladder. It is still extremely unusual to see black actors and actresses in major roles unless the part is racially identified.
