Reading the runes of the London referendum

Article Abstract:

There was a low turnout for local elections in the UK on May 7, 1998, but the turnout in London, England, where a referendum was held on a Greater London Authority, was higher. An analysis of the results in London borough by borough indicates that there is particular support for a Greater London Authority in boroughs where there is a high proportion of people from ethnic minorities. This seems to indicate that local government has for many years failed to reflect the diversity of ethnic communities, and that people from these communities now see a chance to bring about positive change.

Africa's destiny in its own hands

Article Abstract:

Colonialism in its traditional form did a great deal of damage in Africa, and its repercussions are still visible today. However, a number of African countries have managed to become relatively stable, and a new form of colonialism seems to be emerging. In this new structure, the strongest African countries are being encouraged to take responsibility for those which are less able to deal with their own affairs. This was seen recently when the Organization of African Unity supported military intervention by Nigeria in Sierra Leone.

Let's see in colour, and celebrate

Article Abstract:

There are no signs that consciousness of ethnic difference is diminishing in the UK, even though levels of intermarriage are increasing. Indeed, young people generally have a very positive attitude towards their ethnic identity, and are not motivated by a desire to blend into British society, as their grandparents were. It is vital to undertake ethnic monitoring, and there should be no unwillingness to measure the differences between ethnic groups.
