Medicare reform, new Rx plan in doubt for 1999

Article Abstract:

The chances for substantial reforms in Medicare in 1999 are highly unlikely though not impossible. This is because the Congressional National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, which is composed of members of Congress and health policy experts, failed to reach a consensus on a set of recommendations upon which Congress can base legislation in 1999. Without the 17-member commission's recommendations, Congress will proceed with the normal route of developing an agreement that would result in a bill which Pres Bill Clinton could sign into law.

Three physicians urge drug safety board

Article Abstract:

Physicians Alastair J.J. Wood and C. Michael Stein of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Raymond Woosley of Georgetown University Medical Center suggested through writing in The New England Journal of Medicine that a drug safety board be established by the FDA. The independent board will be given the task of reviewing the effects of drugs after they have been sent to the market. However, FDA officials oppose the idea because they are confident that the knowledge of FDA scientists is enough to do the task effectively.

Pharmacy groups urge revisions to diabetes regs

Article Abstract:

The heads of the American Pharmaceutical Assn, National Assn of Chain Drug Stores and National Community Pharmacists Assn have asked the Health Care Financing Administration to revise its proposed Diabetes Self-Management Services regulations. They claim that the regulations would restrict Medicare beneficiaries' access to pharmacy-based diabetes self-management services. These would also limit the services offered by healthcare providers.
