Physicians seeks R.Ph. support for new healthcare system

Article Abstract:

Some physicians have urged pharmacists to support the development of a national healthcare system funded by individuals rather than employers and which provides incentives to promote healthy lifestyles. Such a system would theoretically provide patients with more choices. If no action is taken to promote this system, a government-run national health system will likely emerge in 10-15 years. This was one of the topics discussed at the 48th Annual Western States Pharmacy Conference on Feb 25, 1999, in San Francisco, CA.

Solutions to workplace issues remain elusive

Article Abstract:

Many pharmacists are complaining of the stress involved in filling too many prescriptions in too little time, supervision by non-pharmacists, having to function as insurance clerks and the lack of time in patient counseling. The profession has not come to a consensus on what actions to take to effectively address these workplace issues. A survey conducted by the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York found that 72% of the respondents desired legislative and regulatory measures to establish workload limits.

Which way, pharmacy? Three national pharmacy leaders present their visions concerning the profession of pharmacy for the year ahead

Article Abstract:

Three pharmacy industry experts presented their views on the future and challenges facing the industry. The most important development facing retail pharmacies is the problem of increasing demand for prescriptions. Pharmacists should work to make their profession more patient-focused through education. Another important development is the increasing support by physicians, drug chain stores and drug firms for increased roles of pharmacists in patient care.
