Pairing up for greater power

Article Abstract:

A new group called Scottish and Southern Energy will be created from the merger of Southern Electric with Scottish Hydro-Electric, a deal worth almost 5 billion pounds sterling. Southern Electric shareholders will own 55% of Scottish and Southern Energy, with Scottish Hydro-Electric shareholders taking 45%. The new group will have a market capitalization of 4.87 billion pounds sterling. Job losses will bring cost savings, as will the elimination of duplicated information technology.

BA builds bridges with Brussels

Article Abstract:

British Airways is ordering aircraft from Airbus in a move that has led to speculation about political motives. United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, was present at the signing ceremony, and this has contributed to the speculation. The contract is worth 5.5 billion pounds sterling and is for 188 aircraft. Boeing had previously been the favored supplier for British Airways. A smaller contract for 16 aircraft from Boeing was announced at the same time as the Airbus deal.

All set to invade America

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom utilities are seeking to invest in the US, reversing a trend where US companies have invested in the UK. Some attempts have not succeeded, such as PowerGen's bid for Houston Industries. Local US regulators present obstacles, and US utilities have seen their value rise as bid competition increases. UK valuations have also increased, and the UK industry is maturing, which makes the US an attractive market.
