Crossing the literary borders

Article Abstract:

Bookstores are increasingly offering additional services to attract customers, such as having long opening hours, stocking a wider range of videos and CDs or having a cafeteria attached. Book seller Borders Books & Music also provides a variety of entertainment at its four-storey bookstore in London, UK, with activities including children's storytelling and jazz bands. The store aims to offer a new, relaxed, US-style shopping experience, but it appears too brash and soulless. Smaller bookstores can offer a more intimate ambience and give better individual customer attention.

Taste the future of ice cream

Article Abstract:

Hill Station Ice Cream was formed by Americans Charles and Gina Hall, former investment bankers who were disappointed with the limited range of ice cream available in the UK when they moved there in 1993. They believed that there would be a niche market for ice cream that was less sweet than that usually sold in the UK and in unusual spice flavours. The company's seven ice creams are now available across the UK, but it employs only six people. The Halls still supervise all stages of the production process.

A smart move with a timeless woollen classic

Article Abstract:

Designing knitwear is very exciting, according to Rose Rainey, who has seen particular success with her 1940s-style Smart Walks ribbed cardigan. She travels around the countryside in a horse-drawn gypsy caravan, and this way of life provides her with new sources of inspiration. She focuses on producing timeless, quality designs, and does not pay any attention to fashion trends. She was formerly a fashion stylist, but is now quite glad to have moved away from the fashion scene.
