Mega-merger creates biggest American bank

Article Abstract:

The shares of US banks have risen dramatically following the news that BankAmerica and NationsBank are to merge in a $60 billion stock swap and that Banc One has reached a $29 billion merger agreement with First Chicago NBD. It is expected that UK bank shares will also rise as a result of these deals. NationsBank and BankAmerica will form a company with $45 billion in shareholder equity and a market capitalization of $133 billion. The merger of Banc One and First Chicago NBD will create an operation with 2,000 branches which will be the largest lender to small businesses in the US.

DTI failed to police Clowes properly

Article Abstract:

An official report from the board of trade into the swindler Peter Clowes states thtat accountants at Spicer and Oppenheim, now part of Touche Ross, failed to carry out their responsibilities correctly. The report also criticises the department of trade and industry (CTI), which did not act as a competent regulatory authority in the case of Barlow Clowes. Surprise was also expressed that the Bank of England failed to act more thoroughly in this case,
