Microsoft and BT form Net force

Article Abstract:

An agreement between Microsoft and British Telecommunications (BT) will give BT the exclusive right to test Microsoft's microbrowser software, which permits users to browse the Internet from portable electronic equipment, outside the US. This deal highlights the growing belief that workers will use mobile telephone networks to gain access to their company's computer networks and the Internet. Microsoft has made it clear that it regards the UK as a market leader in developing and implementing new technologies.

Bidders make call on telecoms' future

Article Abstract:

The UK government will auction licences for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), the next generation of mobile phones, in summer 1999. UMTS services are due to go live in 2002. There is fierce debate between existing mobile phone operators and other concerns about the best way to organize the auction. The government wishes to encourage new entrants to the market in order to boost competition, and does not want the four licences to be simply purchased by the four existing mobile phone operators.

Wireless telecommunications concern Ionica is facing serious financial difficulties. Its market value has declined from 640 million pounds sterling to only 45 million pounds sterling, and it has requested its financial adviser to begin talks with holders of its bonds about restructuring its debt burden.
