More Blairite than ever, the Cabinet must now deliver

Article Abstract:

The recent changes to the Cabinet instigated by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair have created a Cabinet that closely reflects Blair's own political views. He has decided that he needs more people he can trust in the areas of policy that are particularly sensitive, such as Northern Ireland. It is a reflection of his current political strength that he has been able to take the risk of appointing Peter Mandelson to handle Northern Ireland. The move of Alan Milburn to Health is also very significant.

New Labour's brashness hides its lack of self-belief

Article Abstract:

There is a serious lack of confidence within the UK's Labour government, even though it has a large majority. It is cautious about identifying itself too closely with any agenda, and is uncertain about what it really wants to do. It must now define itself more clearly, challenging some of those who were its allies in the run-up to the May 1997 election. Prime Minister Tony Blair should not avoid debate about the single European currency, for example, even if this alienates The Sun newspaper.

Let's celebrate again the changes to our electoral geography

Article Abstract:

It has been a considerable achievement for the UK government to establish the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. There have been early difficulties for both institutions, but it would be wrong to dismiss them at this stage, as their creation is the most radical act undertaken by the government so far. It is clear that devolution has brought some vitality into the political scene in the UK, significantly affecting the country's political geography.
