Microsoft's push to link cable TV up with the Net

Article Abstract:

US software concern Microsoft is strongly committed to establishing a presence in cable television broadcasting as the Internet and television broadcasting technologies converge. It has already purchased an 11.5% in cable television operator Comcast, and is now reported to be holding talks with leading cable concerns such as Cox Communications and Tele-Communications. It hopes to gain control over the software used to gain access to the Internet on television screens in return for sharing the costs of developing new interactive services.

How to get viewers to face facts

Article Abstract:

Discovery Communications, owner of the extremely popular Discovery Channel, is set to enter into a wide-ranging joint venture with the BBC. The two concerns are already cooperating on Animal Planet, a wildlife channel launched in the US in 1996, and now plan a second network, to be known as People and Arts. This will initially be made available in Latin America, and will later be made available globally. Discovery Communications is very keen to create links with the BBC, as this will make it less dependent on advertisers.
