Midnight deal that spelt disaster for city's Chinatown; a property firm's collapse has hit a Liverpool community

Article Abstract:

Minutes before the expiry of the financial year 1987/8, Liverpool City Council sold 10 million pounds sterling of property in Chinatown to Charterhouse for redevelopment as a cultural centre, without investigating the company thoroughly. In Jul 1992 Charterhouse went into receivership. The neglect of Chinatown and the decline of the port caused many residents to moved away. Chinese sailors first came in the early 19th century. There was much racism but many white women married Chinese men.

Stiff test for New Labour in northern heartland

Article Abstract:

The Labour party has traditionally enjoyed solid support in Sheffield, UK, but there could be a substantial swing to the Liberal Democrats in the forthcoming local elections there. Many voters believe that the Labour party has given the city a burden of large debt levels and disruption, and claim that services are inefficient. In contrast, voters point to the achievements of the Liberal Democrat councillor.
