Military agent who was out in the cold

Article Abstract:

A colonel from the British Army gave evidence at Belfast Crown Court on Jan 29 92, on the activities and motives of Brian Nelson, a military agent who had infiltrated the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). Nelson, who pleaded guilty to 20 terrorist charges, was described as a courageous man and loyal to the army. Although there are no army guidelines for agents, they are supposed to keep within the law. This was impossible for Nelson, who could only infiltrate the UDA by being involved in criminal activities.

Thin dividing line in secret world of army agents

Article Abstract:

At the trial of Brian Nelson, an army witness has defended the actions of the Military Intelligence informer. Nelson is standing trial for terrorist offences committed while working as an army agent in the Ulster Defence Association. The witness claims that Nelson made understandable mistakes when attempting to avoid detection, but lives were saved by his actions. Nelson overstepped army guidelines, but the question of legality was nonsense in spying.
