Miracle of Macedonia begins as 2,000 a day fly out

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Albanians who fled Kosovo, Yugoslavia, have been living in extremely primitive conditions in makeshift camps in Macedonia. The government of Macedonia believes that Nato countries have failed to give it sufficient support as it seeks to deal with the influx of refugees, which is causing great disruption to the country's economy and infrastructure. However, refugees are now beginning to leave Macedonia. Priority for rehousing in other countries will be given to the sick, the old and the disabled, followed by families who have been able to stay together.

Mother Clare, in red, sorts out the feeding of 1,000

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short has visited the valley of the River Lepenec, on the border between Macedonia and Kosovo, Yugoslavia, where 115,000 ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo are waiting to cross into Macedonia. She has emphasized that the refugees will be cared for, and inspected the facilities being set up to deal with the refugees. However, it is clear that it will take a great deal of time and effort to meet the needs of all the refugees.

At last, aid arrives in the valley of death

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Albanians who have fled Kosovo, Yugoslavia, and are now just over the border in Macedonia have been facing extremely harsh conditions. They have been prevented from moving further into Macedonia by hostile Macedonian troops, and have received very little assistance. However, aid agencies are now beginning to reach them, and Nato troops have been creating tented camps. The refugees' long-term future remains uncertain, especially as Macedonia is unwilling to receive them.
