Mobile peak meets immovable village

Article Abstract:

Some residents of the village of L'Ile Falcon, France, are refusing to move, despite warnings from the French government that the village is in danger of being crushed by the collapse of the Ruine de Sechilienne, a 2,500 ft mountain just to the east of Grenoble, France. Two-thirds of the villagers have moved away, but around 100 remain there. They feel that the fact that the government is putting very strong pressure on them to move does not make sense, as the government is not planning to shut the N91 main road from Grenoble, France, which runs between the mountain and the village.

Oh, what a lovely war!

Article Abstract:

The present conflict between the UK and certain European Union countries over international trade in beef could cause serious damage to the UK's relations with continental Europe. The UK has a legitimate case, even if it has been poorly presented by the government. However, it has been taken up and exaggerated by those who wish to use to further their own cause in opposing the European Union. Consumers in Europe cannot be blamed for being wary about British beef, as it was the UK government in the first place which warned of the possible dangers to health.

New look for France's farming heartland

Article Abstract:

The French government has finalized plans for future rural policy to be based on social and environmental considerations, as well as on economic considerations. Farmers will be invited to agree to 'contracts' with the government, with the level of their subsidies being determined by their role in creating jobs, protecting the environment and boosting food quality. The government hopes that this approach will reverse the serious decline in the rural population. This is also the aim of measures to prevent small farms being taken over by larger operations.
