The sister of mercy who sees hope in murderer's execution

Article Abstract:

Americans will be forced to think more deeply about the death penalty as a result of the case of Karla Faye Tucker, who will almost certainly be put to death in Texas for her part in a double murder in 1983, according to Sister Helen Prejean, a strong opponent of capital punishment. She believes that Tucker's case poses moral dilemmas that have not previously arisen with people convicted of murder. Tucker admits the crime, but has become a committed Christian and now gives counselling to others. She cannot be easily dismissed, as she has received extensive media coverage.

Quebec wrangle prompts a new Jewish exodus

Article Abstract:

Montreal, Canada, has traditionally attracted many Jews from other countries, as it is perceived as having a very strong Jewish culture. However, continued uncertainty about the future of Quebec as part of Canada has prompted many Jews to leave Montreal for other parts of Canada or for cities in the US. Recent incidents have left many Montreal Jews feeling victimised, and there is now a sense that they are under siege.
