Money, Mandela and the townships hoping for a cricket reconciliation

Article Abstract:

The conflict between the West Indies Cricket Board and its players, who are demanding improved pay and conditions, could have a negative impact on South Africa, where the West Indian team is due to tour. South African President Nelson Mandela clearly feels that the process of national reconciliation in South Africa, which is already encountering difficulties, could be further damaged if the tour does not go ahead. Cricket has played a key role in uniting blacks and whites, and has also been a symbol of South Africa's international acceptance.

White farmers in fear of the killers

Article Abstract:

There have been 2,400 attacks on farms since the first democratic elections were held in South Africa in 1994, and more than 500 white farmers have been murdered. In almost all cases, the attackers have been black. The farmers believe that the attacks are politically motivated, while reports backed by the government conclude that the attacks are mainly criminal. President Nelson Mandela is coming under growing pressure from white farmers to resolve this problem.

Blacks chip away at monuments to Afrikaner power

Article Abstract:

Considerable efforts are being made in South Africa to redefine the country's cultural heritage. There are still many monuments to Afrikaner nationalism, for example, and these are being balanced out with monuments reflecting key events and people in black history. Some Afrikaner monuments have been removed, but President Nelson Mandela is keen to avoid alienating the Afrikaner community. This cautious approach is being condemned by some blacks.
