Monica Baly

Article Abstract:

Nurse and nursing historian Monica Baly qualified as a nurse and midwife at the Middlesex Hospital in London, England, in 1938 and 1939 respectively. She worked in the Princess Mary RAF Nursing Service during the second world war, and set up a burns hospital in Foggia, Italy. She gained her Health Visitors' Diploma at the Royal College of Nursing shortly after the second world war, and in 1951 became the Royal College of Nursing's Western Area Organiser in Bath, England. After retirement, she gained an Open University degree and undertook post-graduate studies at London University.

Diana Mulgan

Article Abstract:

Classical musicians' manager Diana Mulgan studied the violin and the piano from an early age. She studied German at Nottingham University, England, and in 1972 began working for musicians' manager Lies Askonas. She became particularly interested in spotting talent, encouraging performers and attending live concerts. She devoted as much time and energy to little-known performers as to famous ones. She was also responsible for developing the Insight Series, a series of concerts where audiences were introduced to the poetry within Lieder.

King Palmer

Article Abstract:

Musician King Palmer studied at the Royal College of Music. He conducted the West End show 'Miss Hook of Holland' in the late 1930s, and wrote film music for 'The Dark Eyes of London' and 'Secrets of the Stars.' He served as a special constable during the second world war. After his marriage in 1947, he purchased a bookshop in South Kensington, London, England, specializing in the arts. During the 1960s, he wrote music for several pantomimes, and also composed children's stage works.
