Montserrat fears Britain's hidden agenda

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed among residents of the island of Montserrat that the UK government will announce a forced evacuation of the remaining 4,000 residents by Feb 1998 because of the danger of volcanic eruption. The UK government has denied any such plan, and the Montserratian government has stated that no discussions have been held on this issue. However, it is certainly true that the UK government is looking at a new report drawn up by volcanologists. Some Montserratians believe that strained relations with the UK will give new impetus for gaining full independence.

Poor prospect for ballots as bullets fly in Marley's yard

Article Abstract:

Trench Town, the area of Kingston, Jamaica, closely associated with Bob Marley, has become a place of great social tension. It has seen frequent violence since the early 1980s, leading to many deaths and injuries. There have been particularly serious problems since 1994, and the police are unwilling to place themselves in danger by patrolling the streets. However, there are some signs of efforts to unify the community. The Covenant Community Church, for example, attracts around 60 people to its services, with 180 children attending the kindergarten.

Germans in struggle to gain control

Article Abstract:

German forces are finding it difficult to take control in Prizren, Kosovo, Yugoslavia. The main road to the city from Albania is blocked by at least 300 highly volatile Serb paramilitaries, and there are Kosovo Liberation Army fighters on the road north to Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. Many ethnic Albanians are still hiding in the mountains outside Prizren, unwilling to return there until there is a greater sense of security.
