More dance than brass

Article Abstract:

The Williams Fairey Brass Band was persuaded by artist Jeremy Deller to become involved in the 'Acid Brass' project, giving a series of performances of late 1980s dance music. The band had some reservations about the music, but Deller proved that he had the ambition and the delicate touch required to make this project successful. There were extremely complex musical arrangements, and these proved very popular with audiences. The performances contained a strong element of humour, but were also bold and lively.

The object of seeing

Article Abstract:

The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Material Culture.' This looks at the object in British art in the 1980s and the 1990s, and covers the work of more than 40 artists. It includes Damien Hirst's 'The Lovers,' a cabinet containing jars of cow parts, and Anish Kapoor's 'Curved Mirror,' which creates a hallucinatory sense of depth. It makes no attempt to group the exhibits in terms of representing a certain British style.

Short, sharp and drawn from the hip

Article Abstract:

The Mavericks Writers and Film Festival, being held for the second time by Gerry O'Boyle and Frank Murray, has an atmosphere of confidence. This is attributable to the personalities of O'Boyle and Murray, who invoke an imaginary concept of Celtic existentialism. The festival is based around writers whose work is very current, including Nick Cave and John O'Donaghue. It also features an impressive list of films, including Irvine Walsh's 'Acid House.'
