Not sold on PR

Article Abstract:

The UK's universities and colleges have not come to grips properly with marketing and public relations, according to some observers. At some institutions, financial constraints are being used as an excuse to drop a function in which there was little belief in the first place, while at others press officers receive salaries much lower than they could expect in the private sector or even from other public and voluntary sector organisations. There is a risk that universities and colleges are not focusing on communicating with the outside world in a strategic way which connects with their overall development plans.

The face of power

Article Abstract:

Academics at Manchester Metropolitan University, England, who are holding a conference on Renaissance civil servant Niccolo Machiavelli are trying to link him with Peter Mandelson and Charlie Whelan. It can be argued that trying to compare Machiavelli with Mandelson is rather misguided. Mandelson can be seen as having attempted to work for the greater good of socialism, rather than for personal advantage, unlike Machiavelli. Mandelson has become fully associated with the Millennium Dome project, while a true Machiavellian would have distanced himself to avoid any potential embarrassment.

Shirley on the scaffold

Article Abstract:

Dame Shirley Porter, former leader of Westminster council in London, England, is soon to be the subject of serious allegations in a report from John Magill, the District Auditor. The report will state that the policy adopted by the council for selling council houses in marginal wards in an effort to win the 1990 council elections was against the law because it was intended to achieve political advantage. The case is likely to continue as the auditor goes to court to persuade a judge to make an order of surcharge and disqualification.
