Moscow faces crisis over Black Sea fleet

Article Abstract:

The dispute over the ownership of the Black Sea fleet is becoming heated enough for Boris Yeltsin to visit the area. The Ukraine is laying claim to the fleet as its headquarters lies in the Crimea and Russia only has limited access to the Black Sea. Servicemen in the area have been ordered to pledge allegiance to the Ukraine, a move that Russian commanders see as a threat to unity in the armed services. Mr Yeltsin had secret talks in Novorossiysk on Jan 27 92 with the Russian officers from the fleet to reassure officers that the fleet would remain with the united commonwealth.

Republics reel from an ecological crisis

Article Abstract:

Economic conditions in the 15 former Soviet republics are unlikely to permit spending on environmental protection, although inefficient industries have seriously polluted the atmosphere. Professor of Human and Regional Geography at Nottingham University, England, J P Cole estimates 10 years of improvement works could cost 550 billion pounds sterling. The USSR used to contribute to foreign aid but in 1993 it competes with the Third World for assistance.

Man of many promises faces jobs test

Article Abstract:

The French political scene will benefit from greater clarity following the selection of Jacques Chirac as president-elect. The new government will have to reflect a balance between Chirac's own Gaullist RPR and the centre-right UDF, which could lead to some internal friction, but there is widespread public support for Chirac's seven-year mandate. He will probably select Alain Juppe, a moderate Gaullist, as prime minister.
